Crop height

Analysis of RS data can assist in crop growth monitoring based on crop height estimates. UAV or satellite images that are acquired with sufficient lateral and longitudinal overlaps can be processed to derive estimates of crop height at the time of image acquisition. Acquisition of UAV images at regular periods within the cropping season can, therefore, provide a measure of crop growth and an accurate estimation of biomass.

Within the STARS project, estimated crop height from UAV-derived canopy models were found to have a good correlation with in-situ measured (median) crop height of certain crops (figure 4.7). This reveals the potential of remote sensing in monitoring crop growth parameters.
