Drones for agriculture

Drones or Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used to collect very high spatial resolution images that, alone or combined with other data streams, are increasingly being used to support decision-making at fine spatial scales. The ICT Update agricultural magazine has recently published a special issue on the use of this relatively new technology in agriculture. The STARS project is featured in this special issue in an article that outlines the role of UAVs to improve agricultural practices in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia as well as the various challenges that need to be overcome for a successful use of UAVs and of UAV images to advance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

For more information please see the ICT Update website or download the Drones for agriculture special issue.
