STARS report showing evidence of food security issue in Karamoja, Uganda
The AgriSense-STARS team recently prepared a report on the critical food security situation in Karamoja, Uganda. The report was packed with overwhelming evidence from Karamoja, including same day photos sent by one of the extension officers AgriSense-STARS works with in Moroto District. The photos sent using an AgriSense tablet and GeoODK application collaborated the NDVI anomaly images from GLAM East Africa and could not be misunderstood or misrepresented.
The report along with videos recorded during the field assessment were presented September 25, 2015 to members of parliament from Karamoja, The Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. An immediate decision was made and the government released funds to send relief food to Karamoja and the first relief food trucks left the next morning (see picture below).
This goes to show how STARS’ work can directly influence farmers' livelihoods. By empowering decision makers with irremovable evidence and information on crop conditions, Uganda can start to not only deliver assistance in time, but further expand programs of disaster risk financing that seek to activate mechanism to ensure alternative sources of income prior to disaster.
